Phones that do not pull engineers off the work
Most tech companies are not set up to answer the phone. The people who know the product are writing code, running deployments or on customer calls, and the main line rings into a desk that nobody sits at. Callers still ring, though: a customer whose login has stopped working, a prospect comparing suppliers, a partner chasing a contract, a recruiter hoping to reach the CTO.
Onwards Answering gives that line a person. Our receptionists work from home across Scotland, answer live in your company name during business hours, and follow a call flow built around your product and team. Support calls are logged with the details your team needs to raise a ticket, sales enquiries are qualified and passed to the right person, and everything else is filtered so it does not reach your engineers. After hours, calls go to voicemail at no extra cost.
The calls tech teams find hardest to handle
Support calls without context
A customer rings to say something is broken, but the call lands with whoever is nearest, who takes a name and little else. Your support team then spends the start of the ticket chasing the basics: which account, which product, what error and how urgent. Poor first contact slows every fix that follows.
Sales enquiries during sprints
Prospects tend to call when they are ready to talk, and a missed call can send them straight to the next supplier on their list. In a small tech company the founder or sales lead is often in a demo or a planning session, so new business calls go unanswered at the moment interest is highest.
Interruptions that break focus
Recruiters, cold sales calls, surveys and people asking for someone who left months ago all ring the same number. Each one pulls a developer or product manager out of focused work. Without someone filtering the line, the calls that matter least end up costing the most time.
Remote teams, no front desk
Many tech firms work hybrid or fully remote, with no reception and nobody who clearly owns the main number. Calls divert to a mobile on silent, or to a voicemail box nobody checks. Callers conclude the company is hard to reach, which is a poor signal for a business selling reliability.
What our receptionists do for tech companies
Every service below runs to a call flow agreed with you before the free trial starts.
Support call triage
Receptionists follow your triage questions, capture account details, product area and urgency, then send a clear summary by email or SMS so your support team can raise the ticket. Calls you class as urgent can be transferred to the person you name.
More on call handlingSales enquiry qualification
New business callers are asked the questions your sales team would ask, such as company size, current system, timescale and budget. Qualified leads are passed on straight away, or booked into a demo slot in your calendar.
More on enquiry conversionWarm transfers to your team
When a caller needs a person now, the receptionist calls your colleague first, explains who is waiting and why, then connects them. Nobody lands in a voicemail box or has to repeat their problem from the start.
How call transfers workFiltering unwanted calls
Recruiters, cold sales pitches and marketing calls are handled politely and kept away from your developers. You decide what gets put through, what becomes a message and what is declined on your behalf.
More on virtual receptionistsOverflow for releases and outages
Keep answering your own line and let calls divert to us when nobody picks up, or when a release, outage or launch brings more calls than your team can take. Calls are answered in your company name, so callers notice no change.
Using cover only when busyMessages where your team works
Every call ends with a summary sent by email or SMS, or to the Onwards Answering Connect app and portal. Messages can go to a shared support inbox so they sit alongside the rest of your team's queue.
How messages reach youThey are saving businesses so much time. Plus, they are really cost effective and just great people to work with.
Data protection when an answering service takes your calls
Tech buyers ask hard questions of their suppliers, and an answering service should be no exception. Under UK GDPR, when a business uses a call answering service, the business is normally the controller and the answering service is its processor. The ICO says the contract between them must set out the subject matter, duration, nature and purpose of the processing, and include minimum terms such as acting only on the controller's documented instructions, confidentiality, appropriate security and deleting or returning data when the contract ends.
Onwards Answering works under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act, acts as a data processor when handling data for clients, and processes it only in line with client instructions. Call data and messages are kept in line with client agreements, systems have restricted access and staff are trained on confidentiality. Your duties as controller stay with you, so review the terms as you would for any other supplier.
What makes Onwards Answering different
Real people, never bots
Each call we take is answered by a trained receptionist speaking in your company name, not an automated menu or a recorded voice.
No per-call charges
You pay an agreed monthly package with no per-call fees, no bundles of minutes and no cap on how many calls we answer.
A summary after every call
Every call ends with a summary sent to you by email or SMS, and messages are also kept in the Onwards Answering Connect app and portal.
Familiar callers recognised
Returning callers are recognised, so the people who ring you often are greeted like someone your business already knows.
Voicemail after hours included
When the working day ends, an after-hours voicemail on your business number is included at no extra cost, so callers can still leave a message.
A home-working team in Scotland
Our receptionists are based in Scotland and work from home, backed by team leads and client managers. You get a small, personal team that learns your business, not a large call centre.

- 3

Messages and enquiries reach you by email, SMS or the Onwards Answering Connect app.
Tech company call answering: common questions
Can your receptionists give technical support to our customers?
No, and they will not pretend to. Receptionists answer in your company name, follow the triage questions you set, record the account, product area, error and urgency, and pass a clear summary to your support team. During set-up we build a bank of frequently asked questions, so simple non-technical queries, such as where to find your support portal, can be answered on the call.
Can urgent support calls reach our on-call engineer?
Yes. You agree the rules in advance: which issues count as urgent and who should hear about them. The receptionist can transfer the caller to the named person, or take a detailed message and send it immediately by email or SMS. Outside business hours, callers can leave a voicemail, which is included at no extra cost.
We are a remote team with no office phone. Will this work?
Yes. You can divert your existing number to us, or use an optional secure Business Number that keeps work calls off personal mobiles. Receptionists answer in your company name and transfer calls to whoever is available, wherever they are working, with messages sent by email, SMS or the Connect app.
How do you handle sales calls from prospects?
Receptionists ask the qualifying questions your sales team gives us, such as company size, the system they use now and their timescale. Strong leads can be transferred live or booked into a demo slot in your calendar; others are sent as a detailed message so your team can follow up while interest is fresh.
How much does a call answering service cost for a tech company?
Onwards Answering offers a free 2 week trial, then plans from £72 per month. There are no per-call charges and no cap on the number of calls. We agree a package based on your expected inbound volume and review it after 3 months, only discussing a change if there has been a sustained difference.
